Land O’Lakes Further Expands an Already Vast Purina Feed, Mazuri and LabDiet Recall

The recall that keeps growing and growing and…

PMI Nutrition International (Purina Mills International) announced the expansion of an already expanded global recall of a vast number of exotic animal feeds due to the possibility of excessive levels of vitamin D, distributed internationally. Land O’Lakes and its subsidiary PMI Nutrition International issued a fourth recall of products manufactured at Land O’Lakes’ Richmond, Ind.-based plant due to the potential for elevated vitamin D levels, the companies reported Friday.

Earlier this month, PMI Nutrition recalled four lots of feed after receiving customer complaints of animal illness and death. A few days later, PMI expanded the recall to include three additional lots of feed, and about a week after that, PMI further expanded the recall to include several lots of Aquamax feed and dozens of additional lots of LabDiet and Mazuri feed. On the same day, Land O’Lakes Purina Feed recalled several lots of feed manufactured at the same Richmond plant where the PMI products were manufactured and Feed Solutions, a DBA of Land O’Lakes, also recalled several lots manufactured in Richmond that were distributed to Tractor Supply and Del’s Feed & Farm Supply stores.

Elevated vitamin D levels may cause death, or otherwise be harmful to animals and fish. The products listed below are being added to those included in recalls announced on July 3, July 6, and July 12, 2012*, which were initiated after receiving customer complaints involving animal illness and small bird mortalities.

PMI Nutrition International has determined that additional Mazuri® and LabDiet® products fall within the scope of previous recalls, and is expanding a recall to include the additional varieties with specific lot codes listed below due to the potential for elevated vitamin D levels. Elevated vitamin D levels may cause death, or otherwise be harmful to animals and fish if fed for extended periods, potentially resulting in lack of interest in eating, weight loss and possible joint stiffness.

The product lots included in the recall were manufactured at the Milford, Indiana plant, using ingredient initially manufactured from April 2, 2012 through May 8, 2012 at the Richmond, Indiana facility. The other lots included in this expanded recall were initially manufactured at the Richmond, Indiana plant.

The products were distributed nationwide and to international customers in Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, Taiwan, Singapore, Chile, and Uruguay. Lot codes for some products listed in this recall expansion extend beyond this date range, due to recoding upon further manufacturing, including use as an ingredient in other feed formulations or packaging into different sizes. Dealers have been asked to hold their inventories of these products, to notify affected customers, and to retrieve the product from these customers. the manufacturer recommends the affected product should not be used, and, if possible, should be returned to the retail dealer.

The current expansion of the recall includes one Purina Feed brand, as follows:
