Jones Natural Chews Recalls Woofers Dog Treats for Salmonella

dog on windy beach

A press release last Wednesday announced the recall of Jones Natural Chews Woofers brand dog treats because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The recall was the result of a routine sampling program by Colorado Department of Agriculture Feed Program which revealed that the finished products contained the Salmonella bacteria.

Why you should care

Salmonella can affect animals and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products. People handling dry pet food and/or treats can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the chews or any surfaces exposed to these products.

 How Salmonella can effect humans

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

How Salmonella can effect pets

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Would Mollie buy these treats?

Absolutely not. Why, you ask? After all, they are made in America. Quite simply, as with most pet food/treats they are born of the pain and misery of cruel animal welfare practices on farms. Regardless of where they are made, I will not support the ongoing systemic cruelty to animals by purchasing any item from any company that does not adhere to strict animal welfare protocols with such as Animal Welfare Approved or the Certified Humane animal welfare program. Period. Full Stop.
