Your complete guide to the Diamond pet food recalls (UPDATED)

(UPDATED May 27, 2012, 11:00 am PST)

Just when the recalls were mounting to an unmanageable state and frazzled bloggers were tearing their hair out, food safety pro Phyllis Entis, aka the Food Bug Lady at eFoodAlert came the rescue with a well-organized, condensed guide to the Diamond pet food recalls. What follows is an adaptation of Phyllis’ fabulous, easy-to-follow resource for all your Diamond recall information needs in one handy location.

Dry dog food manufactured in Diamond Pet Foods’ Gaston, South Carolina production plant has been linked to at least 15 cases of Salmonella Infantis infections in 9 states, according to a May 3, 2012 report from CDC. Confirmed outbreak cases have been documented in Alabama (1), Connecticut (1), Michigan (1), Missouri (3), North Carolina (3), New Jersey (1), Ohio (2), Pennsylvania (2), and Virginia (1). Five people were hospitalized. Additionally, one ill person has been reported from Canada.

However, most foodborne illnesses occur in individuals who are not part of recognized outbreaks because they have not sought medical care or submitted a specimen for laboratory testing, so likely there are more people sick in this outbreak. For every confirmed case of Salmonella infection in an outbreak, the CDC estimates 29 others go unreported.

Recall Timeline

December 9, 2011 – April 7, 2012: All batches manufactured at the South Caroline plant in this period are affected.
April 2, 2012
:  Michigan officials detected Salmonella Infantis in an unopened retail bag of Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal and Rice Dry Dog Food
April 5, 2012
: Diamond Pet Food was alerted to the connection of human illness to contaminated product originating from the South Carolina plant.
April 6, 2012
: Diamond recalled Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal and Rice Dry Dog Food.
April 8, 2012
: Once the outbreak investigation confirmed a link between the illnesses and samples of dry dog food manufactured in Diamond Pet Foods’ Gaston, South Carolina production plant, the company voluntarily shut down the facility. Diamond announced it temporarily “suspended delivery” of all products made at the Gaston, South Carolina facility until “more information is available”. Yet according to the FDA it was “to clean and implement additional procedures.” Diamond Pet Foods on the other hand said once it can be assured that quality control standards are met at the plant, it will “resume distribution”.
April 12, 2012 – April 20, 2012
: FDA performs on site inspection of the Diamond SC plant. During which time a positive test result for Salmonella was found in a Diamond Puppy Formula.
April 26, 2012
: Ohio public health investigators confirmed an earlier test (by Michigan officials during the week of April 9) that found Salmonella in two bags of Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul dog food, that product was subsequently recalled the same day.
April 30, 2012
: Diamond expanded its recall to include Diamond Puppy Formula dry dog food and Diamond resumes production at the South Carolina plant despite the source of the Salmonella contamination not having been determined.
May 3, 2012
: CDC initial announcement linking Salmonella Infantis infections with dry dog food.
May 4, 2012
: Diamond “voluntarily expanded the recall out of concern for our customers and their pets” to include nine brands.
May 9, 2012
: Dog and cat foods manufactured at the Gaston, South Carolina plant but sold under different brand names were not recalled until after the CDC reported the outbreak of human illnesses due to Salmonella Infantis.
May 10, 2012
: Diamond Pet Foods resumed production at the Gaston, South Carolina plant after conducting a cleaning and testing operation at the facility, according to the FDA. Diamond said earlier that it resumed production in Gaston the week of April 30.
May 15, 2012
: The FDA posted its Investigational Observation Report (483 report) on their website. Finished product samples were tested as part of the inspection process; FDA found Salmonella in a sample of puppy food, which was then recalled by the company.
May 16, 2012
: Salmonella confirmed in two dogs fed recalled pet food, according to the FDA. Two unconfirmed deaths of cats in Canada due to being fed the recalled pet food. The Diamond Pet Foods investigation is still “open and pending,” according to the FDA.
May 18, 2012: Diamond Naturals dry dog food made in their Meta, Missouri plant recalled for possible contamination with Salmonella.

Sick Pets

UPDATE May 16, 2012: Two dogs can be added to the list of clinically confirmed infections in the Diamond Pet Foods Salmonella Infantis outbreak, according to FDA’s Laura Alvey, Deputy Director, Communications Staff at the agency’s Center for Veterinary Medicine. Both dogs lived in the same house as an outbreak victim, and were fed one of the recalled dry dog food products. In order to confirm an outbreak-related case of Salmonella in a dog, a vet would have to submit a pet’s stool specimen for laboratory testing, which typically isn’t done. Asked how many complaints of pet illness the FDA has received, Alvey said the agency can’t yet reveal that.

Typically, the number of pet related illnesses or death cannot be tallied, because no such database exists of reported diseases for animals. Unlike human illnesses being traced and linked to the source by the Center for Disease Control, pet food has no such system. Until such a program is created and implemented, there are no accurate estimates available.

 Distribution

Diamond Pet Foods has recalled 13 brands of dry pet food formulas that were manufactured in Gaston and one made at their plant in Missouri. All batches manufactured between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 are affected in the South Carolina recalls. It is important to remember that although the recall notices indicate distribution by state, that the food may have been further distributed through pet food channels including online store purchases. It is always best to refer to production codes and best-before dates on your bag.

Affected Products

The recall only includes dry cat and dog food. To find if the pet food you bought is affected by the recall look at the production code; if the product you have BOTH a number “2” OR “3” in the 9th position AND an “X” in the 10th or 11th position, your product is affected by the recall. The best-before dates for the recalled products are December 9, 2012 through April 7, 2013.

The following are two examples of bags that show how reading the production code and best-by date may be difficult, if not impossible;
in which case, assume that it is part of the recalled product.

Solid Gold
Distributed in: USA and Canada from between January and May 2012. Notice from Solid Gold:  WOLFKING: We have been able to determine that all the 15# and 28.5# bags of recalled WolfKing went to distributors in Canada. 4# WolfKing has been difficult to pinpoint because the Missouri plant also ran a batch of WolfKing on December 30th and when the 4 pound boxes are sent to distributors, only the best before date is recorded, not the batch code. We have found at least one US distributor with recalled 4lb WolfKing bags so we are keeping that open for all of the United States and Canada. WOLFCUB: All three sizes (4 lb, 15 lb, and 33 lb) of WolfCub Large Breed Puppy were distributed throughout the US and Canada. WolfCub is a very slow moving food for us and sometimes batches are made that far exceed the Canadian demand so are then shipped out domestically.
