Kasel Industries, makers of pet treats in the U.S., is in the news again. Once more, dog treats are being recalled by Kasel because of possible Salmonella contamination. The treats were found to be contaminated following sampling by the FDA sometime last year.
The recall covers a wide variety of treats, from chicken jerky to pig ears to hearts of lamb, produced in its plant in Denver between April and October last year. The recall involves several brands of dog treats manufactured by Kasel, including Boots & Barkley, BIXBI, Nature’s Deli, Colorado Naturals, Petco, and Best Bully Stick brand dog treats. Why You Should Worry
Pets and humans infected by Salmonella may be lethargic, and could experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Pets can also infect other animals or humans. Alternatively, humans could also be infected after handling contaminated pet foods. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.
What You Should Do?
Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Kasel Associated Industries can be reached for questions at 800-218-4417 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. MDT.

Kasel’s Troubled Past
Kasel is enduring an unusual amount of attention from the FDA. Last year, Kasel came under fire for refusing to withdraw Nature’s Deli Chicken Jerky Dog Treats because of possible Salmonella contamination, prompting the FDA to do it for them. Before that, Kasel recalled their Boots & Barkley Roasted Pig Ears & Variety Pack Dog Treats for Salmonella Contamination. And before that Kasel recalled their chicken jerky dog treats. And before that Kasel recalled their Boots & Barkley Beef Bully Sticks for Salmonella contamination.
It’s difficult to say why Kasel is having so much trouble with the FDA, but their refusal to co-operate with the federal government probably didn’t endear them to the Agency. I would imagine the Agency are like the cops: you just shut-up and listen, say yes sir, no sir, and above all don’t try to screw with them, unless you enjoy having your life turned upside down. Oh, and it’s usually a good idea to do exactly what they tell you, because authority figures generally expect complete obedience.
Neighbors Revolted by Rotting Dead Carcass Smell
The city of Denver isn’t too thrilled with Kasel either, the location of Kasel’s plant: neighbors complained about a putrid stench emanating from the factory. The smell described as the “stench of pig ears” (which makes me wonder how anyone becomes familiar with the smell of a pig’s ears), however, one neighbor was more specific in his description of the odoriferous emanations, “It’s like a rotting dead carcass smell,” complained the neighbor, adding, “It sucks when you have to smell something as bad as what’s coming out of that factory.” Ew.
Incredibly, Kasel decided to piss off the city of Denver even more by refusing to pay the “nuisance odor” fine of $500. Instead, Kasel Industries, after being cited, filed a federal civil rights lawsuit arguing the city should not have approved residential development in an area that has been zoned industrial for a century. Kasel’s lawyers claimed the city of trying to “illegally deprive” them of property in order to develop it for residential and commercial use.
Kasel’s problems with Denver go back years, “We received multiple complaints about this company and odors emanating from this company,” said Celia Vanderloop, Denver’s director of environmental quality. In fact, Vanderloop said that over the years the city has received dozens of odor complaints against Kasel.
Final Thoughts
Today’s recall is another chapter in the sad and sorry state of pet treat manufacturing, one that that should remind consumers to stay informed about the companies that manufacture pet food and treats or you could end up with some dodgy doggy treats – even if they are made in the USA.
