Recall of Purina’s Feed Solutions Products Due to Elevated Vitamin D Level

Fishes are my friends

Purina Mills, manufacturer of Feed Solutions animal feed products, sold to Tractor Supply and Del’s Feed & Farm Supply, announced a recall of a limited selection of certain feed products, specifically for horse feed, pond/game fish feed, waterfowl/game bird feed, ratite bird feed and guinea pig pet food for elevated levels of vitamin D, a potentially lethal feed contamination. The press release follows:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – July 13, 2012 – Feed Solutions has initiated a voluntary recall of certain varieties of the feed products with specific lot codes listed below, due to the potential for elevated vitamin D levels. Elevated vitamin D levels may cause death or otherwise be harmful to animals and fish if fed for extended periods, potentially resulting in lack of interest in eating, weight loss and possible joint stiffness.

Although no customer complaints have been received to date, the following products with specific lot numbers are being recalled as a precaution due to analytical test results on retained samples that indicate a potential for elevated levels of vitamin D.

These products were manufactured at the Richmond, IN feed plant and were distributed at select Tractor Supply and Del’s Feed & Farm Supply stores nationwide starting April 2, 2012 through May 8, 2012. The affected Tractor Supply and Del’s Feed & Farm Supply locations have been contacted and asked to hold these products and to notify and retrieve the product from customers. The affected product should not be used, and where applicable, be returned to the closest Tractor Supply or Del’s Feed & Farm Supply location.

Lot numbers for the WellSolve W/G® product are laser printed at the bottom of the label next to the ingredients listing on each pail. Lot numbers for the other recalled products are laser printed on the back of each paper bag near the top. Lot numbers are formatted as follows: APR= Month / 17=Day of Month / 12 =Year / 2 =Plant Code.

Customers should return remaining products to their retailer to receive a refund. For more information on the product recall, contact your local Tractor Supply or Del’s Feed & Farm Supply location or Customer Service at 1-800-227-8941 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (EDT), Monday through Friday. 4. Over supplementation in pet foods, raw diets included, is becoming a real issue. While I understand canned and kibble foods need to be supplemented to avoid being under supplemented since these foods are highly cooked, thus depleting them of any naturally occuring vitamins and minerals, commercially prepared raw diets, if constructed properly, don’t need added supplementation. That being said, it is known that most commercial raw diets DO include extra vitamins and minerals. What that tells me, as someone who owns a raw diet company, is that these other companies don’t completely understand that if they use Whole Natural Foods in their diets extra supplementation is unneeded and to some extent dangerous. So it is important that pet owners ask the same questions of raw companies that are asked of the canned/kibble companies.
