Expanded Natura Pet Food Recall Hurts P&G’s Global Market

I bet dat ain’t got no icky Salmonella bacteria in it! Nosiree!

Procter & Gamble’s pet food sector is suffering from it’s third batch of recalls in less than two weeks; recalls that included its Iams Shakables Treats brand for mold and last weeks enormous Natura Pet Innova, EVO, California Natural, and Healthwise pet food brands for bacterial contamination — just got a whole lot bigger.

Natura Pet, which unveiled the first recall in its 21-year history, has been expanded to include more formulas of its Innova, EVO, California Natural, HealthWise, and now itsKarma brand dry pet foods. After further sampling by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Department of Agriculture confirmed the presence of Salmonella in additional formulas of Natura Pet dry cat and dog food formulas and in a cat pet treat. Out of “an abundance of caution”, Natura is also expanding its recall to include product made in the surrounding time-frame of the affected brand’s production dates.

The affected products were sold nationally through veterinary clinics, pet retailers, both online and off, throughout the U.S., Canada, Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong and Costa Rica. At this point Natura canned pet foods are not affected by the recall. This affects dry foods only; no canned wet food is affected by this announcement. But who knows what the future may hold for P&G’s pet food brands should the FDA decide to go after Procter & Gamble and conduct an investigation into the cause of the contamination in the same way it has gone after smaller, more vulnerable, pet food companies. We shall see.

What to do if you have a problem

Report it! The place to do so is the FDA Pet Food Complaint Portal. Do not return the food to the store you purchased it from — keep it, in case it is required for testing. And remember to always save the bags they came in to ensuring that you know the lot number of the food you have purchased in the event of a problem.
