How to Report a Problem with Pet Food: The Simplest – and the Best – Guide You’ll Ever Find. Seriously.

I have written many guides on how to report problems with a pet food, but this guide is a stripped-down version of my earlier guides; making it easier to understand what can sometimes feel like a daunting and frightening task.

But there is no reason to fear the process, if you just follow these simple steps.

You can submit a report electronically through an online form through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Safety Reporting Portal (just be sure to brush your cat off your keyboard first) or if that seems too stressful or time-consuming, you can simply call the FDA and speak to a Consumer Complaint Coordinator in your state.

It really is that simple.

Here are some handy hints to keep in mind:

  • Save any label(s) because that is how investigators track the involved batches.
  • When reporting, please try to include as much information as possible, including the specific product name, lot numbers, veterinarian’s report and diagnosis, and any other pertinent information.
  • Most importantly, ask your veterinarian to submit a report to the FDA as well, because your veterinarian can often provide additional information and details that can aid the investigation.
